Suwa Shrine, Nagasaki 2018.
When in Nagasaki this shrine is not to be missed. It holds great history of being the tutelary shrine for Nagasaki. The city had once been controlled by the Society of Jesus and many shrines were burned down but rebuilt again later. The Suwa shrine is located on Mount Tamazono with (some say 200, 300-400 stone steps to climb) I went up without counting so I’m guessing it was about over 200+ because I felt my leg muscles burn!! Once you reach the gate you will get the chance to see a beautiful panoramic view of the city framed by the mountains. Each year, a festival is held here, called Kunchi which is known to be one of the biggest festivals in Japan. There were plenty to see, stone statues to red Torii gates, the shrine itself and beautiful views. The grounds were very enchanting, peaceful and because it wasn’t busy when I arrived, I got the chance to absorb the beauty in silence.
