Maruseppu Wisteria Park (まるせっぷ藤園)
Further out Northeast of Hokkaido is a town called Engaru, within it lays a place called Maruseppu, part of the Monbetsu district. There is a park called Heiwayama (平和山公園) that blooms beautiful wisteria trellis between late May and the middle of June every year, along with a festival held here on the first Sunday of June. One of the first things you’ll notice is obviously the wisteria flowers, and the wooden tall clock of Heiwayama Koen!
To reach the park it is only about a 15 min walk from the JR Maruseppu Station (丸瀬布駅). From Asahikawa Station (旭川駅) you can catch the JR Limited Express Taisetsu / Okhotsk or JR Line towards Kitami, which will take roughly about 1 hour and 40 mins directly to Maruseppu Station. Like many places outside of the city, the trains are not as regular and it’s always best to check beforehand to plan your journey. I like using Hyperdia alongside google. I think there’s about 3-4 direct trains there and the last train back to Asahikawa is about 7pm ish so be sure not to miss it.
The park is surrounded by so much nature, almost all green hills and quiet peacefulnesses. You can also get a good view of the small town, and a lovely place to have a picnic. There are public toilets and free parking available, vending machines and also a play area for the kids. Maruseppu is a beautiful rural area of Hokkaido that is worth the time and visit.
