Oku-Iya Double Vine Bridge, Wild Monkey Bridge
(奥祖谷二重かずら橋・野猿)
Finally I had arrived to see the double vine bridges, otherwise known as the couples bridges. The larger one is called the male bridge (男橋) which stretches 44 metres across the river, it is accompanied with a small waterfall, the sound of the gushing waters made me feel very relaxed.
On the opposite side is the female bridge (女橋) it is shorter and measures 22 metres. The bridges are made with vines and steel cable that is renewed every few years to ensure safety. After slowly getting across, there was a 3rd bridge…
Known as the Wild Money (野猿) it’s actually a wooden cable cart where you can pull yourself across the river. When I got there there was a member of staff who was happy to pull me across to the other side. It was a fun experience overall. My legs were a bit tired by this point but I still had to climb the many stairs back up to the top and continue with my journey!
