Maruyama Park (円山公園)
Not to be confused with the Maruyama Park in Kyoto. This is Sapporo one. When I was on the bus going to Mt. Okura Ski Jump Stadium, I saw many people go in and out of the park through the shrine…So I decided to pop by after Mt. Okura to see what’s going on?
Well…Hanami plus golden week from last year so, it was expected to be crowded as ever. As soon as I entered the park I could see groups of families and friends having not only a picnic but a bbq. People were wheeling their bbq grills, carrying bags and cases of food as they struggled to find space on the grass. So you can imagine the smell of smoky charcoal and sizzling meat flying around. I guess, this was sort of a mild case of culture shock. A very interesting one too.
The atmosphere was buzzing with people. There were food stalls set up near the shrine, and I came across cutely packaged candy floss!! There were still a lot of cherry blossom still in bloom. Despite the herd of people, it was surprisingly a very enjoyable time to take a stroll under such a beautiful sky. I could only imagine Maruyama Park on a quiet day.
