I managed to catch the performance just in time! It’s held at the Ryukyu Village and it was a pretty cool experience. They performed some really cool dances on the day and there was a Shisa! One of the performers told it to go home in the end but it sat down and refused. The Shisa reminded me a little bit of the lion dances during the Lunar New Year. Shisa is a very interesting part of Okinawa culture with close ties to the guardian lions from China. You’ll find plenty of statues on roof tops, streets, shops etc. They say a Shisa traditionally wards off evil spirits. Overall it was a very entertaining performance filled with laughter, music and dancing.

How lucky to see this! Beautiful! I love the lion dance. Powerful mythological visuals! Japan’s living mythology sustains our psyches in this profane world.
